Branding ideas
Below are some ideas that I took away from our last meeting on April 19:
-having another name for 20 Above Holdings (of course keeping the 20 Above for our internal and official needs) but having another name that is more familiar to the public and that can symbolize both PAVED and AKA
-with that name, we can start a branding process. This could start with branding our building to make the community more aware of who we are and what we do. Some of the suggested titles for this were "Come if you Dare", "The Radical Riversdale Rhizome" "Rhizome"...Lab, Experiment, Hub are all words that have been floating around as possibilities...This is just a starting point, but you get the idea -doing some kind of an intervention with the building to attract attention (wrapping it or placing a real life google map arrow).
-with this branding process, we need to start thinking of a visual emblem that symbolizes the project -launching a campaign where people buy bricks or plaques on the wall (as Troupe de Jour did)
-doing a campaign where people can get their name in lights on our billboard (we can project it form across the building) for one night, or longer...
-once we develop our branding strategy, develop a fundraising plan and actually attract interest, we can start a Foundation that will continue the development of this project and actually sustain it
I think it is important to think about the branding campaign, the building and whatever tool we come up with for generating revenue as a central point, a hub that represents both PAVED and AKA. Once funds are being raised, these can be distributed down to each organization, which can be used for programming, HR, outreach, etc. Thoughts?
PS Here is an example of a public art piece that excited me to think about branding our location and building.

Summary from April 19th - Comparative Analysis and Gap Analysis
In this meeting we discussed the prepared Comparative Analysis of aka and PAVED Arts.
Major gaps identified:
-little to no visibility beyond the artist community
-under-developed donor programs
A Donor/Sponsorship Program is tied to higher community visibility. Donors have to become stakeholders, people who really care about the success of the organizations and will volunteer to bring more money to it.
Who are these potential skateholders?
-corporations
-individual donors--> retired lawyers, doctors, bankers)
-the board, and their immediate friends
How do we develop stakeholders?
-partnerships (extend our reach so more people care)
-web campaign
-"unnatural" partners
-branding
Foundations: A foundation is a non-profit organization hinged to the parent organization. It is solely intended to find money for the parent org. We are right now too young and small for a foundation but it can be a future goal. Foundations have separate boards, are incorporated and are often volunteer-run. They also serve as an advocacy group for the parent organization.
How do we use our actual building?
-we can brand the building
-update the facade with the help of RBID facade
-make a tarp cover for the billboard in between installs that can be rolled up and down by staff. This tarp can have our "slogan" on it--the brand of the building.
Questions asked by Brenda for the committee:
1. How do we make art more fun? (so as to attract stakeholders but without compromising our mandates or core programming?)
2. How do we negotiate the two separate organizations owning the building and how do we brand the building over and above the orgs without losing our identities? Where do we start?
These various sections can be titles of new pages that we can all add to.

Summary - December 1, 2012 - Situational Analysis
AKA Gallery and PAVED Arts Capacity Building Process
Summary of Capacity Building Committee Meeting: December 1, 2012

• planning
on significant growth

online discussion through Facebook page
• February - meeting to discuss results so far and
provide input

Introduction to Capacity Building Blog
Goals of the Capacity Building Committee:
1. Investigate the potential of our co-owned building and find ways of developing that potential to make money
2. build a sustainable plan for the future of the building and, by proxy, the galleries within
This private blog is a means to share ideas and have a record for future reference as we continue developing a strategic plan for our building. Ideas can include distant dreams for the building, more feasible short-term goals, key items that need to be addressed, proposed strategies, etc.
You'll find you can make posts or pages. Posts will archive automatically like a regular blog but I believe you can change your date when you first publish a post so that it doesn't wind up at the top. This is useful for locating the summaries of meetings in a chronological order.
You can also create pages. Pages will show up as tabs at the top of the blog. Right now we only have one: Introduction. That is where our primary blog will be. The other pages will be stand-alone pages to which we cannot add posts but they are somewhat more special than other posts because they are special enough to have their own tabs. What these should be, I'm not sure yet, perhaps we'll eventually have a conclusion tab, or a strategy tab to be separate from this general brainstorm blog.
